We are very sorry to announce (belatedly) the death of Simon Haviland in March 2020. Simon had not attended many Wynkyn de Worde Society events, due to Parkinson's disease. However, I am sure that many members will remember him from his many years at Phaidon Press, the publisher of books on art and architecture founded in Vienna in 1923 by Ludwig Goldscheider, Béla Horovitz, and Frederick Ungar. The company was moved to England in 1938 to escape the Nazis.
Before Phaidon, Simon had worked for the Pallas Gallery, publishers of fine art prints, followed by three years at the fine art publishers, the New York Graphic
Society in Greenwich, Connecticut.
After the takeover of Phaidon in 1990, Simon did freelance editing for a German publisher and published a few books under his own Stonesfield Press imprint.
